Description:This publication was designed to familiarize engineering faculty and students with basic principles involved in the development of an occupational disease. A qualitative conceptual model was developed which described the interaction of a worker with an environment containing potentially harmful inputs. The amount of hazardous material to which the worker may be exposed must be the driving force for determining the physiological, biochemical, or biomechanical responses. Various outcomes of the exposure were discussed along with the defense mechanisms of the body and the means of eliminating the harmful agent. The effect of differences in human susceptibility, aspects of medical intervention and surveillance, and rational approaches to setting of safe standards of occupational exposure were each considered in the model. Specific anatomy, physiology and defense mechanisms associated with several of the more important human systems were discussed. Several examples of occupational diseases were considered.
