Description:Aerosol penetration into two John Deere Series 6000 tractors was measured with stationary and mobile tests. These tractors are termed the "new" and the "old" tractor. The new tractor was a freshly manufactured tractor. The old tractor had been in used for about one year. This testing was conducted because of concerns about inadequate exposure reduction with some recently manufactured cabs. The mobile testing is described by ASAE standard S525. The stationary test was conducted by using a single optical particle counter to measure aerosol number concentration inside and outside the tractor while the tractor was setting in a maintenance shop. Apparently, the new cab did not provide as much exposure reduction as the older tractors and this new tractor was not acceptable in terms of the ASAE S525 standard. At 3 J.1m, the aerosol penetration into the cab was 0.0016 for the old tractor versus 0.028 for the new tractor. This decrement in performance appears to be caused by inadequately seated filters and leakage where there is negative static pressure in the tractor's ventilation system. The results of the stationary tests appeared to be consistent and predictive of the mobile tests. The stationary testing procedure may be useful for quality control and maintenance purposes.
