Description:A combined environmental medical evaluation conducted at the Syntex Fabrics (SIC-2241), Incorporated, Williamsport, Pennsylvania shows that a potential health hazard from exposure to dust containing cotton may exist to workers exposed in Area One of the Weaving Department. Although no case of byssinosis has occurred during eight weeks' operation of the weaving process, there is evidence that upper respiratory irritation is present to a greater degree in workers from Area One than in the surrounding areas. Recommendations include the adoption of recommendations in the NIOSH Criteria Document for cotton dust by Syntex Fabrics, and audiometric testing and X-ray of the chest as part of pre-employment examination.
