Description:The exposure of employees at the Chrysler Detroit Tank Plant (SIC- 3795) at Warren, MI to stainless steel welding fumes, sparks, and radiation containing either chromium (7440473), hexavalent chromium- (VI) (1333820), inorganic nickel (7440020), iron-oxide (1317619), manganese (7439965) and fluorides, in or near the production welding department of a government owned battle tank factory has been evaluated. Medical evaluations were conducted by visual skin inspections and health record review. Environmental analysis was accomplished by the collection of 269 atmospheric samples. Separate samples were collected in order to evaluate exposure to various components. Welder breathing zone samples were also collected. Production welders in both the hull and turret areas are exposed to hazardous levels of chromium, hexavalent chromium and inorganic nickel. Welders either air arc burning or "scarfing" hulls and turrets were exposed to excessive levels of inorganic nickel
hazardous levels of chromium compounds are not associated with the scarfing process. Some welders are occasionally exposed for short durations to concentrations of iron-oxide above the evaluation criteria. Concentrations of manganese and fluorides were found at levels below consideration as a health hazard. Recommendations based on these data have been made. [Description provided by NIOSH]
