Description:

Workers exposures to formaldehyde (50000) from a kidney dialysis unit were surveyed on March 16 and 20, and July 13, 1981 at the United States Public Health Service Hospital (SIC-8081) in San Francisco, California. The evaluation was requested by the Chief of Environmental Health on behalf of 10 employees. Personal and area air samples were analyzed for formaldehyde, and employees completed a medical questionnaire. Formaldehyde concentrations ranged from undetectable to 0.9 part per million (ppm), well below the OSHA standard of 3ppm. Workers frequently reported eye and nose irritation during kidney rinsing. The author notes that the kidney rinsing procedure has been modified, and formaldehyde exposures appear to have been eliminated. Recommendations are included for the use of protective equipment and clothing, proper maintenance and sterilization of the dialysis units, and periodic sampling for formaldehyde.
