Description:Interviews and skin examinations were conducted among assembly employees complaining of dermatitis at the Cincinnati Time Recorder (SIC-3622), Cincinnati, Ohio, on January 27, 1983. The evaluation was requested by management on behalf of 25 of the 300 workers. A walk through survey was conducted and relative humidity was measured. Workers complained of dry skin and rashes. None of the work processes used enough solvents or other chemicals to present an inhalation hazard or to cause the cutaneous problems. Relative humidity ranged from 20 to 23 percent; recommended values are 30 to 35 percent. The authors recommend adjustment of the relative humidity, and changing to milder soap in the washroom. They also note that tops should be replaced on chemical containers, food and smoking should not be allowed at work stations, chemical containers should be labeled, spray painting should be performed in the spray booth, and proper air flow should be monitored in the paint spray booth.
