Description:Solvent vapor exposures were investigated on November 5 and l0, 1981 at the Arts Consortium (SIC-2752) in Cincinnati, Ohio. Twelve full time and 18 part time employees requested the evaluation. The solvent based cleaner, Quick Wash 104, was analyzed
personal and area air samples were tested for methylene-chloride (75092), and naphthas (8030306). Work practices were observed, and workers were interviewed concerning medical complaints. Quick Wash 104 contained 4 percent methylene-chloride and more than 40 percent aromatic naphthas. Airborne methylene-chloride concentrations ranged up to 36.9 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3), well below the NIOSH standard of 261mg/m3. Total area and personal area naphthas concentrations ranged from 7.3 to 229 and 94 to 258mg/m3, respectively. No applicable exposure limit exists for naphthas
however, the measured concentrations were considered excessive. Solvent containers had safety precaution labels, but workers did not follow instructions. Symptoms included headaches, lightheadedness, dizziness, and skin irritation. The author concludes that the conditions under which the solvent is used creates a health hazard. He recommends product labeling, worker training, protective clothing, and ventilation in rooms where solvent is present.
