Description:In response to a request from the management of One Hour Optical (SIC-8042), Lakewood, Colorado, an evaluation was made of potential health hazards existing at this workplace. This shop provided optical services, and occupied space in a newly constructed shopping center. Shops were built adjacent to one another, each with its own air conditioning system. New wall to wall carpeting had been installed. Air samples were taken, and no detectable readings were obtained for carbon-dioxide (124389), carbon-monoxide (630080), hydrocarbons, and ozone (10028156). Two workers who had become ill on a given day were interviewed. The headache and nausea they reported may have been caused by lubricants and coatings in the air conditioning unit. These substances became hot and possible off/gassing occurred as this was the first day on which the air conditioning system had been used. The authors conclude that a hazardous situation did not exist at the time of the survey. The authors recommend that at the start of the heating or cooling seasons the doors of the shop be opened so that any lubricant odors would be ventilated as rapidly as possible.
