Description:On January 28-29, atmospheric sampling for asbestos was conducted in the Reptile House, National Zoological Park, Washington, DC. Sampling results indicate that Reptile House employee's exposure to asbestos is minimal. All samples were below the Federal Standard of two fibers per cubic centimeter of air. The ceiling of the reptile house is coated with a material that contains 50% asbestos which is deteriorating and flaking off. This should be replaced or covered with a sealer adhesive. Also, hot water pipes in the Service Rooms are covered with asbestos insulation in poor condition. Suitable corrective action is needed here. Appropriate personal protective equipment should be used when working with asbestos.
