Description:This report concerned a fatality which occurred on August 8, 1984, involving an elevator repairman working at a housing facility owned by a city housing authority in Illinois. The victim was performing routine maintenance on two elevators located in the facility. He and his coworker cleaned the machinery, changed the reduction gear oil, and performed a general mechanical inspection of the rear elevator. The hoisting equipment, over a period of years, had shifted and reduced the clearance around the hoisting cables. The workers fixed this problem and the victim proceeded to apply a coat of paint to the floor areas while the coworker started maintenance on the front elevator. The temperature in the room where the victim was working was approaching 100 degrees-F. The victim himself was a large person who had just eaten a large lunch. He was painting with a polyurethane floor paint. It is suspected that the man may have collapsed and while in this state made contact with the energized resistors resulting in possible electrocution.
