A Journeyman Electrician Electrocuted in North Carolina: FACE 86-02

  A fatal accident circumstances and epidemiology (FACE) report describing an electrocution in North Carolina was presented. The report was part of the NIOSH FACE project to collect data on electricity or confined space/related accidents involving fatalities. The victim, a journeyman electrician, was electrocuted while making a connection to a 4 inch junction box at a construction site on September 19, 1985. The construction site was a large office building in a corporate office park. Burns were noted on the victim's right thumb where he apparently contacted the metal of the stripping tool. Another burn was noted on the left lateral chest wall. The job foreman and job manager were not aware of any safety problem in the past. The company apparently did not have a written safety policy. Interviews with the foreman and other electricians revealed that making connections while wires are energized was not an unusual practice ; it was probably done 50 percent of the time. Recommendations include not performing wiring when lines are energized, developing and implementing a comprehensive occupational safety program, and providing training in hazard recognition and safe work practices.
