Description:The 25 year old manager of a small restaurant was electrocuted while cleaning the floor of the kitchen. During the process of washing the floor in a restaurant, the manager slipped on the soapy water he had placed on the floor and, in falling, reached out to grab the handle on a nearby commercial refrigerator. The cord on the refrigerator did not have a ground prong. There was a ground fault in the refrigerator, causing electrocution of the man. The man's wife, on hearing him fall, came into the kitchen area and was able to separate the victim from the refrigerator, although she received a shock herself. It appeared that the ground fault resulted from excessive wear on the insulation of the conductors supplying the compressor unit; conductors were exposed at a cutout hole in the refrigerator case, and were neither protected from abrasion nor provided with strain relief. Recommendations arising from this accident include: encouragement of all restaurant owners and managers to conduct formalized safety training for all employees; and making sure all electrical receptacles in kitchen areas of restaurants are protected by ground fault circuit interrupter breakers or receptacles.
