Iron Worker Electrocuted in Indiana: FACE 85-47

  A fatal accident circumstances and epidemiology (FACE) report on an electrocution in Indiana was presented. The report was part of the NIOSH FACE project to collect data on electricity or confined space/related accidents involving fatalities. An 18 year old apprentice iron worker and four journeymen iron workers were installing a vertical wind screen in the gable end of an airport hanger on July 21, 1985. The workers were being transported in a truck mounted aerial bucket from a 65 foot high station to the floor. As the aerial bucket retracted, the victim reached out to push away a ceiling light. The light fixture provided a path to ground and the worker was electrocuted. The source of electricity was apparently a short located in a receptacle in the aerial bucket. The electrical equipment being used by the contractors was generally in poor condition. The cause of death was listed as cardiac arrest due to electrocution, as a result of contact with 110 Volts. Recommendations include enforcing existing regulations governing the use of electrical equipment, maintaining electrical equipment in proper working condition, and correcting electrical faults immediately.
