Description:A 33 year old journeyman electrician suffered electrocution while repairing a fluorescent light fixture over a kitchen sink. While the company for which the man worked had adopted a safety program, it was not implemented on a daily basis. The victim and a helper were repairing several electrical malfunctions in a single family residence. The electrician was sitting on the sink when he apparently contacted an energized wire on the load side of the ballast. The circuit was not deenergized at the panel box or at the single pole switch on the wall. The home owner and the helper attempted to make the victim comfortable until fire department personnel arrived about 15 minutes later. The victim responded initially but died a short time later from cardiac arrhythmia due to electrocution. It is recommended that all employees working around electrical circuits and equipment deenergize those systems prior to initiating maintenance or repairs, that such employees be trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and that safeguards designed to be used when working on energized circuits or equipment be followed.
