Description:While repairing an air conditioning unit at an apartment complex, a maintenance manager was electrocuted. The man was employed as maintenance manager in a 262 unit apartment complex. His employer had no written safety policy or safety program. The manager himself was responsible for training new workers. A 240 volt air conditioning unit at one of the apartments needed a compressor replaced. The victim and a helper replaced the compressor after deenergizing the unit. After turning the power back on the unit did not function properly. The victim found a loose connection in the internal connections of the unit and tried to fix it without deenergizing the unit. His right hand entered the unit and the index finger contacted a capacitor, providing a path to ground through the victim. His helper also received a shock when he attempted to pull the victim from the unit. He deenergized the unit and went for help. In spite of cardiopulmonary resuscitation efforts, the victim was dead on arrival at the hospital. It is recommended that employees working with electrical conductors deenergize them prior to the start of any work, that a comprehensive safety program outlining proper safe work procedures be devised by the employer, and that employees be aware of workplace hazards and safe operating procedures, preferably through a training program designed to teach them.
