Description:A Class-A lineman was electrocuted when the boom of a digger derrick truck contacted a 7200 volt power line while he was leaning against the truck. The victim was employed by an electrical contractor specializing in power line construction and maintenance. The company was relocating rural transmission and distribution lines for a local power company to make them more accessible for service. The power lines along a dirt road were located in a field about 100 yards from the side of the road. Power lines also ran along a paved road which intersected the dirt road at that point. New poles were to be set along the dirt road so the power line in the field could be moved closer to the road. The digger derrick truck was to dig holes and lift the poles into position. After explaining instructions and safety precautions, as this was his job, the victim began to install the truck's ground rod attached to a 30 foot ground cable. Another lineman began to raise the boom on the truck, before the 30 foot ground cable was fully installed, which was against company procedures. The boom contacted the power line running perpendicular to the dirt road and electrocuted the victim. Recommendations arising from this accident included the adherence to established safe work procedures by all employees, and the use of an observer when work requires men to be operating near overhead power lines.
