Sign Serviceman Working Off of a Truck Mounted Platform Ladder Electrocuted in Ohio: FACE 85-30

  On June 27, 1985, a 33 year old sign painter was electrocuted when he made contact with a 7200 volt power line while working off of a truck mounted platform ladder. He was employed at a branch office of a lighting systems company that provided maintenance service for lighting systems and illuminated signs. He painted the framework of the sign and then lowered the ladder to the truck where he obtained a camera. He began to extend the aerial ladder up and away from the sign and toward the power line to properly position himself for photographs of the sign, as required by the company. The back of his neck and shoulders contacted the power line. The victim remained in contact with the power line until the power line melted. His clothes caught on fire and the lanyard hooked to his safety belt burned, and he fell approximately 50 feet to the ground. It is recommended that employers identify all safety hazards at the work site and assure that personnel assigned to perform a specific task are thoroughly trained in the performance of this task, are trained to recognize any associated hazards, and are periodically evaluated to assure compliance with proper safety procedures.
