Description:Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) testing is essential for improving the health of people living with HIV and reducing new HIV infections. HIV testing improves the health of people living with HIV by identifying undiagnosed HIV infection and linking persons with HIV to medical care, treatment, and prevention services. HIV testing also significantly reduces the risk of HIV transmission among those who learn they are living with HIV. Studies have shown that the prevalence of high-risk sexual behavior is reduced substantially after people become aware of their HIV positive status. Of the estimated 1.1 million adults and adolescents living with HIV in the United States at the end of 2006, 21% were unaware of their infection. Among all persons diagnosed with HIV infection in 2008, 33% progressed to the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) within one year after HIV infection was diagnosed. Most of these persons were likely infected with HIV for years before they were diagnosed. Early diagnosis of HIV, which relies on HIV testing, allows infected persons to benefit from medical care that helps reduce disease progression and from interventions that help prevent further HIV transmission. Although the percentage of U.S. adults who have ever been tested for HIV has increased slightly in recent years, approximately 55% in 2009 have never been tested for HIV.
