Description:The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) officially opened its new country office in Manila, Philippines, in April 2022. In April 2023, the Government of the Philippines granted CDC approval to fully implement its program under the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). The Philippines is experiencing the fastest growing HIV epidemic in the Western Pacific region, with a 411% increase in daily HIV incidence between 2012 and 2023. It is also among the countries that have the highest rates of tuberculosis (TB), which is the leading cause of death among people living with HIV (PLHIV). Through PEPFAR and CDC’s Division of Global HIV &TB (DGHT), CDC Philippines addresses the HIV and TB epidemics by focusing on key prevention and treatment service delivery gaps in public and community sites as well as on policies to strengthen public health surveillance and laboratory systems in high-burden regions of the Philippines, primarily in Region VI (Western Visayas) and Region VII (Central Visayas) with implications for the national level. CDC and its implementing partners collaborate closely with other PEPFAR agencies, the Philippines Department of Health (DOH) and other country government agencies, multilateral organizations, non-governmental organizations, stakeholders, civil society, and other partners to ensure CDC’s PEPFAR program activities are aligned with the Philippines’ national strategies, priorities, and needs.
