Las personas con enfermedad de células falciformes tienen un mayor riesgo de presentar coágulos de sangre que la población en general. A un coágulo de sangre en una de las grandes venas, generalmente en la pierna o el brazo de una persona, se lo llama trombosis venosa profunda. Si la trombosis venosa profunda no se trata, puede aumentar de tamaño o desprenderse y desplazarse a los pulmones. A un coágulo de sangre en los pulmones se lo llama embolia pulmonar y puede causar la muerte.
