Description:This report describes how vital statistics can be used to compare birth weight distributions and neonatal mortality among small geographic areas. In particular, the characteristics of the Standardized Mortality Ratio obtained by applying indirect standardization to 1974-1974-77 neonatal mortality and birth weight data are emphasized. Summary tables are presented on geographic distribution of several measures, as well as detailed results for each of 202 Health Service Areas.
