Description:This report discusses the various methods that have been proposed or used for obtaining estimates of health characteristics for local areas. Particular emphasis is given to discussion and evaluation of synthetic estimation procedures developed originally at the National Center for Health Statistics for purposes of estimating levels of health characteristics obtained from the Health Interview Survey for each State and the District of Columbia.
