Description:Nearly 1 million people in the United States identify as transgender. The term transgender describes a person whose gender identity or expression is different from their sex assigned at birth and is often used as an umbrella term to include people of additional, non-cisgender identities. Transgender people, particularly transgender women, are heavily affected by HIV and transgender women are among the groups most disproportionately affected by HIV in the U.S.
To end the HIV epidemic, CDC is actively working with public health partners, other federal agencies, and community leaders to improve HIV prevention and care for transgender people nationwide and reduce health disparities.
