Description:Statistics are presented on the utilization of non-Federal short-stay hospitals based on data abstracted in the National Hospital Discharge Survey from a national sample of hospital records of discharged inpatients. The numbers, percent distributions, and rates of patients with surgery are presented for 1970, 1974, and 1978. The number and rate of all- listed surgeries (as many as three) are shown for categories of surgery by sex and age. Number and percent distributions for all- listed surgeries are shown for surgical categories by race, and number of all-listed surgeries are shown for surgical categories by bad size of hospital. Number of single-listed operations and corresponding average lengths of stay are shown by surgical category for sex and age of patient.
