    Statistics are presented on the utilization of short-stay hospitals based on data collected from a national sample of hospitals and concerning a sample of patients discharged from each of these hospitals. For the four major geographic regions (North-east, North Central, South, and West), discharges, days of care, and average length of stay are distributed according to characteristics of hospitals, and patients. Rates of discharges, days of care, and daily hospital bed usage are distributed by characteristics of hospitals and by selected characteristics of patients. Rates of bed occupancy are distributed according to characteristics of hospitals.
