Description:This year marks the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the 10th year of the WTC Health Program. The September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City (NYC), the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and the plane crash near Shanksville, Pennsylvania resulted in nearly 3,000 deaths and thousands of injuries. In NYC, hundreds of thousands of people were exposed to a massive cloud of toxic gases and particulates. Nearly half a million people are estimated to be at increased risk of adverse health effects from exposures to physical, psychological, and emotional stressors in the days, weeks, and months following the terrorist attacks [Murphy et al. 2007]. Health research strategies led by local government and private institutions began almost immediately after the attacks and continues today through the World Trade Center (WTC) Health Program (the Program), a federally funded and coordinated limited health benefits program. As an integral part of the Program, research conducted has led to extensive literature on WTC-related physical and mental health effects. This research allows us to examine prevention and mitigation strategies intended to reduce adverse health effects in populations affected by future disasters.
