Description:The main objective of the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) is to monitor the health of the United States population through the collection and analysis of data on a broad range of health topics. Since 1960, the survey has been conducted by National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS). NHIS data are used widely by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and the public health research community to monitor trends in illness and disability and to track progress toward achieving national health objectives. NHIS was selected for inclusion in the Vision and Eye Health Surveillance System (VEHSS) due to its wide range of vision-related questions, including questions related to Healthy People goals, as well as its inclusion of all three risk factor variables of interest.
