Description:The U.S. Census Bureau, under a contractual agreement, is the data collection agent for the National Health Interview Survey. NHIS data are collected through a personal household interview by Census interviewers. Nationally, the NHIS uses about 400 interviewers, trained and directed by health survey supervisors in the 12 U.S. Census Bureau Regional Offices. The supervisors responsible for the NHIS are career Civil Service employees who are selected through an examination and testing process. Interviewers (also referred to as Field Representatives, or “FRs”) receive thorough training on an annual basis in basic interviewing procedures and in the concepts and procedures unique to the NHIS.
