Description:There were 4,158,212 babies born in the United States in 1990, a 3-percent increase compared with the 19S9 total of 4,040,958 and the third consecutive year marking such an increase (table 1). Provisional data for 1991 indicate a l-percent decline in the number of births; there appears to be a slight additional decline in the number in 1992. The 1990 total is the highest number reported since 1962 (4,167,362) (table 1 and figure 1).
