Description:The number of divorces in the United States fell 1 percent for the second consecutive year, from 1,178,000 in 1986 to 1,166,000 in 1987 (table 1). The 1987 total was 4 percent below the record high of 1,213,000 reached in 1981. The number of divorces fluctuated during the 1980’s, but the 1987 total was lower than that for any year since 19S3.
