Description:According to final data from the vital registration system, the number of U.S. couples that married declined in 1987 for the third consecutive year. In 19S7 the number of marriages was 2,403,378, down less than 1 percent from 1986 and 3 percent from the record high of 2,477,192 in 1984 (table 1 and figure 1). The 19S7 total was lower than any year since 19S0. According to provisional data, marriages dropped further in 1988 and 1989.
