  In 1986 a total o f2,105,361 deaths were registered in the United States, 18,921 more than in 1985 and the largest annual final number ever recorded. Contributing to the increased number of deaths were ( 1) population growth and the “aging” of the U.S. population, that is, the increasing propor­ tion of older persons, and (2) an outbreak of influenza in 1986. The death rate for 1986 was 873.2 deaths per 100,000 popula­ tion, about the same as the rate of 873.9 in 1985. Provisional data for 1987 indicate the death rate (874.0) to be up very slightly from 1986.
