Description:In 1986 a total o f2,105,361 deaths were registered in the United States, 18,921 more than in 1985 and the largest annual final number ever recorded. Contributing to the increased number of deaths were ( 1) population growth and the “aging” of the U.S. population, that is, the increasing propor tion of older persons, and (2) an outbreak of influenza in 1986. The death rate for 1986 was 873.2 deaths per 100,000 popula tion, about the same as the rate of 873.9 in 1985. Provisional data for 1987 indicate the death rate (874.0) to be up very slightly from 1986.
