Description:Between 1982 and 1983 the ratio of induced abortions to live births decreased for the 13 States repofiing this information to the National Center for Health Statistics. This resumes the decline observed in 1980, the only other year in which there was no increase in abortion ratios. There were 15,775 fewer abortions in 1983 than in 1982 in the reporting States. In 1983 the abortion ratio was 360.8 abortions per 1.000 live births. The ratio for black women was 2 times that for white women. The peak age for induced abortions in 1983 was 19 years for white women and 21 years for black women. The highest ratios were reported for the youngest and the oldest women, a pattern observed for both white and black women, although at almost every age the ratios for black women were higher than for white women. From 1982 to 1983 ratios decreased for both white and black women.
