Description:In 1983, numbers of deaths and the death rate increased from the previous year. A total of 2,019,201 deaths were registered in the United States, 44,404 more than in 1982 and the largest annual number ever recorded. The death rate for 1983 was 862.8 deaths per 100,000 population compared with a rate of 852.0 in 1982. Contributing to these increases were two factors: (a) the “aging” of the U.S. population, that is, the increasing proportion of older people in the population and (b) an influenza outbreak at the begiming of 1983.
