Description:Information on births of Hispanic parentage was available for the first time in 1978, when 17 States in- cluded an item on ethnic or Hispanic origin of mother and father on their birth certificates. The 17 States were Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Indiana, Kansas, Maine, Mississippi, Nebraska, Nevada, ‘New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Utah, and Wyoming. In 1979, two additional States– Florida and Illinois–included the ethnicity item on their birth certificates. The 19 reporting States ac- counted for an estimated coverage of 60 percent of all births of Hispanic origin in the United States in 1979. Demographic and health characteristics of 1978 Hispanic births were reported in detail in an earlier report.
