• Description:
  The provisional number of births and the birth rate per 1,000 population for 1981 increased over the comparable figures for 1980. This continued the upward trend that has been observed since the mid-1970’s. The 1981 number of births was the largest reported since 1970 and the 1981 rate was at its highest level since 1971. Except for 1980, when the fertility rate per 1,000 women aged 15-44 years was slightly higher, the fertility rate was at its highest level since 1974.
