Description:The Apgar score was developed in 1952 by Virginia Apgar, M.D., as a means of evaluating the physical condition of an infant at 1 and 5 minutes after birth. It is an indication of the need for immediate medical attention and a predictor of the infant’s chances of surviving the first year of life. The scoring system was developed to predict survival; to compare the results of different methods of resuscitation; to compare the results of care received at different hospitals; to evaluate the results of obstetrical practices such as induction of labor, elective cesarean section, and maternal anesthesia and analgesia; and to insure closer observation of the infant during the first minutes of life.
