  In 1978 there were 1,927,788 resident deaths recorded in the United States, 28,191 more than in 1977. On the basis of final mortality data, the death rate edged up sightly in 1978–883.4 deaths per 100,000 population compared with 878.1 recorded in 1977. Provisional data indicate- cate that the number of deaths in 1979 was about 1,906,000, yielding an estimated death rate of 866.2 deaths per 100,000 population.
