During 1978 there were 2,282,272 marriages performed in the United States. This was an in- crease of 103,905 over the total for 1977 (2,178,367). Part of this increase was due to the inclusion for the first time of nordicensed (confidential) marriages registered in California. When the nonlicensed marriages are included in the national total for 1977, the increase from 1977 to 1978 is 71,897 marriages, or 3.3 per- cent. (See Technical Notes.) Provisional data for 1979 indicate a similar increase between 1978 and 1979.
