The provisional number of live births and the birth rate for 1983 were lower than the comparable figures for 1982. The decline in the number of births was the fust decline since 1975 and the largest decrease reported since 1973. The fertility rate per 1,000 women aged 15-44 in 1983 was the second lowest rate ever recorded in the United States.
