During 1976 there were 3,167,788 registered Iive births in the United States. This was only a slight increase (less than 1 percent) over the 3,144,198 births registered in 1975. However, provisional data for 1977 indicate an increase of 5 percent over the final number for 1976.

The birth rate was unchanged from 1975– the lowest ever recorded in the United States– 14.8 live births per 1,000 population.
