Description:"This document presented mine safety and health research reports from both the Spokane Research Center and the Pittsburgh Research Center, now integrated into NIOSH. Specific topics addressed included: control systems for drilling to avoid unsafe roof conditions, safety enhancements for rock scaling personnel, chemical hazards at active metal and nonmetal mines, mobile roof support technology, engineering controls for reducing surface mining health hazards, skeletal modeling for protective mine gear, accident reconstruction and training, injury prevention during drilling and bolting operations, hazard reduction in surface mining of sand and gravel, and hazard reduction for surface mining haulage equipment. Research programs in the area of catastrophic failure detection and prevention included slope stability studies, design analysis of ore passes, mine hoist and elevator safety, adverse geologic conditions, engineered backfill, warning systems, mine deformation monitoring, prevention of roof support failure, and safety. Surveillance of mine safety hazards reports and communications and technology transfer research was noted. Work was also reported in the areas of hearing loss and prevention, mining injury prevention, human factors engineering, fire fighting training and communications, wire rope hoisting safety, electric shock prevention, circuit protection, disaster prevention and response, lighting strike hazard reduction, remote methane measurements, ground fall hazards, toxic fumes from explosives and blasting agents, and dust and toxic substance control." - NIOSHTIC-2
