Description:In 1973, the marriage rate declined for the first time in 15 years. The rate was 10.9 per 1,000 population, down 0.9 percent from the 1972 rate of 11.0 per 1,000 population. Because the population grew proportionately more than the number of marriages, the rate decreased even though marriages increased slightly. From 1962 to 1972, the marriage rate increased 29 percent. The number of marriages increased rapidly during the 1960s as the large numbers of children born during the 1940s reached maturity.
