  Estimates are presented in this report on the utilization of short-stay hospitals in the United States by the civilian, noninstitutional population during 1969. “Utilization,” as referred to in this report, is expressed as the number and rate of patient dis¬charges, number of patient days of care, and average length of hospital stay throughout the calendar. Data are based upon information collected by the National Hospital Discharge Survey from the med¬ical records of a sample of patients discharged from a sample of short-stay hospitals. The intent of the Survey is to report the hospital experience of the general population.
