Description:This report presents summary estimates on the frequency of surgical operations among inpatients dis- charged from short- stay hospitals in the United States. During 1968 more females than males were hospitalized in short-stay hospitals. Once hospitalized, a relatively higher proportion of males than females had at least one surgical operation (table 1). This and other findings have resulted from the 1968 national sample of short-stay hospitals. (See Technical Notes for definition of short-stay hospitals and other terms used in this report.)
This report consists of two kinds of data: (a) those concerned with the number of discharged patients with and without surgery and their characteristics and the hospitals in which they stayed; and (b) those pertaining to the number of operations by type and body site and by age and sex (table 2).
