Description:"The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) investigated the oxidation of 304 stainless steel (SS) during annealing in simulated combustion products from several air-methane fuel ratios. Atmospheres representing air-CH4 ratios of 14:1 and 18:1 contained free O2, while the atmosphere representing 10:1 air-CH4 ratio did not. A Cr2O3 layer formed on SS samples annealed in the atmospheres containing free oxygen, while a Cr-Fe spinel layer formed in the atmosphere with no free oxygen." - NIOSHTIC-2
