Description:Presented on Tuesday, July 21, 2020.
Acute flaccid myelitis (AFM) is an uncommon but serious neurologic condition. It affects the nervous system and causes the muscles and reflexes in the body to become weak. Most AFM cases have been in young children. Cases have been increasing every other year in the US since 2014.
During this ession of Public Health Grand Rounds, national AFM experts will discuss the epidemiology of AFM, along with the clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and prevention research updates. Grand Rounds also will present a parent’s perspective on building an AFM support network in the US.
Presented by: Janell Routh, MD, MHS (CAPT), Medical Officer and AFM Team Lead, National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, CDC [“Acute Flaccid Myelitis in the United States"]; Rachel Scott, Parent Advocate, ["AFM from a Parent Perspective: Building an AFM Network in the US"] Kevin Messacar, MD, MPH, Assistant Professor, University of Colorado, Children’s Hospital Colorado ["Clinical Presentation and Diagnosis of AFM"]; Emily Erbelding, MD, MPH, Director,
