Description:Envenomization (injury from venoms pro- duced by insects and other animals) is a com- mon public health hazard. Millions of people in the United States are stung by venomous arthropods each year. About 25,000 of these envenomizations result in severe injury, and about 30 of them result in deaths — 12 from bees, 7 from spiders, 7 from wasps, 2 from yellow jackets, 1 each from hornets and scor- pions, and about 1 every 2 years from ants. This mortality contrasts markedly to the usual 14 deaths per year that are caused by venom- ous snakes. Probably many deaths that are caused by venomous animals are never report- ed as so caused.
