Description:Uncontrolled high blood pressure (BP), a key
risk factor for heart disease, stroke, and renal
disease, is a significant public health problem.
Nearly one in three adult Americans are hypertensive (BP 140 mmHg [systolic] or 90 mmHg
[diastolic]); another 59 million are prehypertensive
(BP 120 to 139 mmHg [systolic] or 80 to 89 mmHg
[diastolic]).3 Only about 30% of people who are diagnosed
with hypertension have their BP under control.
Even worse, of the estimated 20.8 million people
in the United States with diabetes, just 12% have their BP under control (BP 130/80 mmHg).5,6
