Description:The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state health departments collaborate on a number of areas to prevent and control obesity and other chronic diseases. These areas include nutrition,
physical activity, and breastfeeding. These highlights focus on state health departments’ coordinated efforts to put into action strategies that encourage improving the health of children in the early care and
education (ECE) setting.
In 2010, CDC’s division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity developed a framework and set of guidance materials to assist states in supporting ECE facilities to meet national obesity prevention standards. The framework, known as the Spectrum of Opportunities for Obesity Prevention in the Early Care and Education Setting, identifies how obesity prevention standards can be embedded into components of a state’s ECE system. These stories showcase successful state efforts along
the Spectrum.
